Maui and the Sun

Long ago, in the beautiful islands of Polynesia, the days were much too short for the people to finish their work. The sun raced across the sky so quickly that there wasn’t enough time for planting crops, fishing, or gathering food. The people grew tired of rushing through their chores and complained about the short days.

One day, Maui, a demigod known for his cleverness and strength, heard the complaints of his people. He decided to do something about it.

Maui’s Mother: "Maui, the sun moves too fast. We can barely finish our tasks before it disappears. Can’t you help?"

Maui thought for a moment and then smiled.

Maui: "Don’t worry, Mother. I have a plan to slow down the sun."

Determined to help his people, Maui gathered a strong rope woven from his sister's long hair. He took with him his magical fishhook, knowing that he would need all his strength to face the sun. With his brothers by his side, Maui set off toward the highest mountain, the place where the sun rises each day.

When they reached the mountain, Maui instructed his brothers to hide behind rocks and wait for the right moment.

Maui: "When I give the signal, we will throw the ropes over the sun and trap it. Be ready!"

As the first light of dawn appeared, the blazing sun rose into the sky. It was so fast that the brothers could hardly believe their eyes. But Maui was ready. As the sun came closer, Maui jumped out and threw his rope over it. His brothers quickly followed, using all their strength to hold the sun in place.

The sun, furious at being caught, thrashed and struggled.

Sun: "Who dares to trap me? Let me go!"

Maui, standing firm, confronted the sun.

Maui: "You move too quickly across the sky. The days are too short, and the people cannot get their work done. From now on, you will slow down!"

The sun continued to fight against the ropes, but Maui pulled out his magical fishhook and threatened the sun with it.

Maui: "If you don’t agree to slow down, I will strike you with my hook!"

The sun, seeing Maui’s strength and determination, finally relented.

Sun: "Very well. I will slow my journey across the sky, but only during the summer months. In winter, I will move quickly as I always have."

Maui agreed to this compromise, and the sun began to move more slowly. The days grew longer, and the people of the islands had plenty of time to complete their work. They rejoiced and praised Maui for his bravery and cleverness.

From that day on, the sun honored its promise, moving slowly in the summer and swiftly in the winter, giving the people both long days for work and shorter days for rest.

Maui’s heroic deed was remembered for generations, and the people never forgot how the demigod had tamed the mighty sun.
